Our tour of downtown Philadelphia started off with coffee and donuts at Federal Donuts on South Street.

Chinese Lantern Festival
Since they opened, I had wanted to have a meal at one of Mike Solomonov’s restaurants. Of course I would have preferred my first experience to have been at Zahav, I had to settle for Federal Donuts. Poor me! 🙃

Breakfast of Champions at Federal Donuts

Chocolate Donut with Caramel Icing and Coffee/Cocoa Crunchies.
After enjoying our decadent start to the day we headed to the Betsy Ross House. Touring this historic residence and business was amazing. And I definitely want to tell you all about it. Since there are so many pictures and details I will share it all in my next post.

Play Ball
Because it was a glorious summer day we decided to take a leisurely drive to see Philadelphia’s amazing Sports Complex in South Philly. One after another you will find a football, baseball, basketball and hockey.

Citizens Bank Park – Home of the Philadelphia Phillies

The Slide by Philly native Joe Brown (1905-1985)
The first facility that we came to was Citizen’s Bank Park which is home to the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team. Steve and I went there for a game many years ago, when it first opened. It was so memorable because we went with our son and daughter in love.

Lincoln Financial Field, home of Super Bowl LIX Champions – The Philadelphia Eagles!!!
Next up was the massive Lincoln Financial Field. As you can imagine, I’m proud and excited to say that LFF is home to Super Bowl LIX the Philadelphia Eagles! Steve and I are huge Eagles fans since we are originally from Philly. I fondly remember spending Sundays watching the games with my Daddy.

Fly Eagles Fly
When Steve and I got engaged, Daddy bought a pair of season tickets so he could take Steve to all the home games. I was a bit miffed that his own daughter wasn’t included on those outings.

Wells Fargo Center, home of the Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers
Across from those two locations is the Wells Fargo Center where both the Flyers hockey team and basketball’s 76ers play.

Driving up Broad Street
It’s really an impressive site to behold with all of the sporting arenas in one area.

Philadelphia City Hall famously topped with Billy Penn statue.

Hot Pastrami Special
From the sports complex we found our way to one of the main streets that goes entirely through Philadelphia, Broad Street. But before we left South Philly, we decided to have an early dinner at Famous 4th Street Delicatessen so we could share a Hot Pastrami Special. This is no ordinary sandwich. They take 3/4 of a pound of thinly sliced, juicy, succulent pastrami and pile it onto a thick slice of seeded rye. That’s anointed with a serious amount of coleslaw with creamy Russian dressing and topped off with another slice of rye. Now you see why this sandwich is sharable and so yummy.

Excited to dig in but not sure if I can open my mouth wide enough!
And, by the way, if 3/4 pound of meat isn’t enough for you, they serve a “zaftig” version that comes with a whole pound of meat. I couldn’t even open my mouth wide snough to bite into my sandwich as it was. I can’t imagine it being even thicker!

That’s just one half a sandwich!
Our tour of downtown Philadelphia started with donuts and ended with pastrami. What could be bad?
