After eight long years we finally returned to our old summer stomping ground the Jersey Shore.
Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know that our vacations are usually planned around food. The only difference between this one and most of our other vacations is that both my husband Steve and I grew up spending our summers in Atlantic City and Ventnor, New Jersey; the infamous Jersey Shore. We still have family and friends there that we love to visit with to reminisce over a great meal.
We drove up with a stop in Raleigh along the way because Brian and Eve were joining us for our week in Atlantic City. Horrendous traffic aside the drive was uneventful. But that traffic made us late for our first engagement, Steve’s brother’s birthday celebration.
Living so far from each other we don’t get to spend much time with Steve’s family so we were thrilled to be there for Hal’s milestone birthday. The party had a Philadelphia Eagles football theme which made it so much fun as we are still Eagles fans even after 35 years of living in South Florida. Seeing so many old friends and family all at once was so delightful and we partied until the wee hours of the night.
The next morning we were delighted to sleep in and have Brian prepare a beautiful breakfast for us! And then we took our traditional ride to see where I spent my summers as a child. The “Cambridge Villa” as my Zeyda (grandfather) called it looked better than ever. My grandparents bought the house at 2 North Cambridge Avenue in Ventnor in the mid 1940s. It was huge with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. It was perfect for my grandparents and parents to enjoy summers at the shore and still have room for guests. I was told that I was conceived in that house. I learned to walk in that house. My cousins and I drove my Bubie and Mom crazy in that house. It was fabulous. But when extended family members would show up with suitcases and announce that “we were just taking a drive (from Philadelphia) and look where we ended up!” it just became too much work for my Bubie. I cried when they sold it. And every time we drive by it a flood of fond memories rush into my brain.
But when lunchtime rolled around we were hungry for just one thing – White House Subs! This legendary sandwich shop opened in 1946 serving the very best hoagies and cheesesteaks anywhere. Every single celebrity who has ever come to Atlantic City has eaten there and there are photos on the wall to prove that. They subs are just that good!!!
Steve and Brian had their usual – half of a Capicola, Genoa Salami and Provolone and half of a Cheesesteak with Sauce. Eve ordered her favorite which is just Genoa Salami and Provolone. And my go to is always half of a Pepper Cheesesteak with Sauce and Fried Onions. They use the very best Italian meats and cheeses, the freshest lettuce and tomatoes, and don’t get me started on the bread. Baked just for them, the bread is delivered several times each day. All I can say is yummy yummy in my tummy.
