We were determined to get to Oregon while we were in Crescent City CA so we started with lunch at The Hungry Clam Brookings Oregon.

Sometimes things change

Our original plan had been to go as far north as Seattle WA with a stop in Portland. From there we were thinking we’d take the northern route back to Florida. But the farther north we went in California, the colder it kept getting. It became apparent to us that it would be far too cold for us to enjoy. Most of the RV parks that Steve contacted were not open for season yet. And the kicker was that snow was forecast for Portland and Seattle.

Be flexible

When you travel full time you need to be flexible. Things happen. Plans change. You want to stay longer somewhere or less time in another. In our case it was the weather that guided our decision to save “the northern route”. including Portland and Seattle, and wait for warmer weather. That made Crescent City CA our last stop before head south. But being only a few miles from the Oregon border we were compelled to go there.

As miserable as the weather had been the day before, that’s how beautiful it was the very next day. Our timing was perfect as we enjoyed our scenic drive to Brookings OR, home of The Hungry Clam.

We noticed that it was really easy to park. We walked right in to the restaurant and snagged one of the 6 tables inside that were very socially distanced. The place was empty which we thought didn’t bode well. Steve and I both wanted Fried Clams so he went up to the counter to order. By the time he placed his order and headed back to our table, the line was out the door. We had picked the right place after all.

This clam shack had a beachy decor.

The Hungry Clam was really cute inside. Lots of windows made it bright and cheery. And the decor had that wonderful, laid back, beachy vibe.

Lunch

A pair of baskets lined with red and white checkered paper filled with golden fried clam strips and French Fries, coleslaw, cocktail and tartar sauces at The Hungry Clam Brookings Oregon

We were happy as clams after eating these awesome fried clams and fries

Our Fried Clams and Crispy French Fries were delivered to the table in cheerful paper lined baskets. The food was piping hot and not greasy at all! The tender clams were very well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The crinkle cut French Fries were nice and crunchy on the outside with creamy, potatoey goodness inside. Plus those ridges held onto my Cocktail/Tartar Sauce combo beautifully. And the portions were huge! We’d go back there in a heartbeat.

Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor

After enjoying our yummy lunch at The Hungry Clam Brookings Oregon and a little shopping, we continued along the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor until we came to a park on the beach. There was an easy walking path to the beach. Suddenly a walk on the beach became imperative. The temperature was only about 55º F but our jackets and the sunshine kept us warm enough to get lots of amazing photos of the glorious southern Oregon coast.

There was stunning beauty literally everywhere we looked. Gnarled pieces of driftwood dotted the water’s edge alongside craggy rocks jutting out of the sand and sea.

I love spotting waterfalls as we explore.

We even got to see a lovely waterfall on our way back to our RV park. If that is how gorgeous the Oregon coast is, we can’t wait to return next year for a month in Portland!
