The Egg House Simi Valley CA was the perfect place for breakfast before spending the day at the Reagan Presidential Library.
Steve and I headed out from Redlands to Simi Valley on a glorious Sunday morning. We were excited to be going on our very first tour of a Presidential Library. But first things, first. We needed sustenance and we were HUNGRY! Luckily we stumbled upon The Egg House.
The Egg House is a cute little place for breakfast. From the outside it looked like a “hole in the wall”. Once inside we couldn’t help but remark on just how cute it was. Everywhere you look there are chickens and roosters and whimsical quotes. It felt somehow familiar to us because it reminded us of one of our favorite Charleston restaurants, Fat Hen, which unfortunately closed recently.
The place was pretty packed inside and under the awning outside. After living in South Florida for almost 40 years, it was just too chilly for us to enjoy a meal al fresco, so we opted for indoor dining. I think we got the last table!
As soon as I looked at the menu, I knew exactly what I wanted to order. The Crab Cakes Benedict. First of all, I love, love, love Eggs Benedict. Making them always seems like such a chore that I almost never make poached eggs at home. And although I have an easy recipe for Blender Hollandaise, it’s still a lot of work for just the two of us. So whenever we go out for breakfast or brunch, my eyes dart right to the selection of Benedicts.
The first egg I cut into didn’t have a runny yolk, but the other egg was perfect. I let my server know about the overcooked poached egg and he brought me, not one, but two new farm fresh poached eggs. Each of those was perfection. And those runny yolks, along with the Hollandaise, made an amazing compliment to the very crabby crab cakes.
I don’t want to take the spotlight off the main focus, The Crab Cakes Benedict, but oh those potatoes!!! The accompanying O’ Brien Hash Browns were so good that they were totally addictive. I was so stuffed, but I couldn’t stop eating those cubes of crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside, potatoes. And what added to the gustatory pleasure was the sautéed onions and bell peppers.
O’ Brien Potatoes were always a popular brunch item when we had our catering business. Eggs and O’Brien Potatoes are a perfect pairing.
Steve ordered an omelet with mushrooms, sausage and Pepper Jack cheese, along with those fabulous O’ Brien Potatoes. Usually that type of omelet is shy on mushrooms and sausage. But at the The Egg House Simi Valley CA, those ingredients were abundant.
Our tummies were full and I sipped the last of my coffee. We were ready for our day of sightseeing.
