Before heading back to Ladybug from The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Steve and I decided to try to find The Christmas Story House from the iconic movie A Christmas Story.
The Christmas Story House
Who could forget that crazy funny scene in A Christmas Story when the Dad opens a box marked Fragile? We watch the movie every single year. And though I know exactly what’s coming, I still laugh out loud when he announces “It must be from Italy! It’s Fra Gee Lee.” Then removes the ridiculous leg lamp from the box and places it on prominent display.
Not far from downtown Cleveland, the house from that holiday classic has been meticulously restored. This gives fans like us a chance to immerse themselves in the world of Ralphie Parker and his delightful family.
Even the house next door is there. You know. The one where those mischievous Bumpus Hounds lived.
Experience the magic
The Christmas Story House opened in 2006 and as per the website “invites visitors to step into the home of the Parker family, lovingly restored to its original movie appearance. This interactive experience allows guests to recreate their favorite scenes from the beloved film. Pose with the iconic leg lamp and replica BB gun, hide under the kitchen sink like Randy, or decode a secret message in the bathroom while washing your mouth out with Lifebuoy soap!”
Stay overnight
If you’re looking for a really fun way to spend a night or two, you can actually stay overnight at both the Christmas Story House and the Bumpus House!
The Bumpuses, Ralphie’s hillbilly neighbors, were the owners of those devilish and smelly hound dogs. Those infamous dogs will always be remembered for harassing Ralphie’s dad. But their claim to fame has to be at the end of the movie when they devour the Parker family’s holiday turkey, forcing them to go out for Chinese food.
The Museum
The Museum of A Christmas Story, which also opened in 2006, is located in the house across the street. There you will find a treasure trove of props from the movie, including the family car, toys from the Higbee’s window display, the chalkboard from Miss Shields’ classroom, and an original “Official Red Ryder Carbine Action, 200-shot, Range Model Air Rifle” BB gun, which is one of only six produced for the film.
The Gift Shop
Adjacent to the museum is a 3,500-square-foot gift shop that offers a huge variety of movie memorabilia and holiday collectibles, including leg lamps and bunny suits. We bought a “Leg Lamp” night light as a gift for our son and DIL who are huge fans of the iconic film.
Steve and I had so much fun recollecting our favorite scenes from the movie at The Christmas Story House!! If you are a fan of the movie make sure to add it to your itinerary the next time you visit Cleveland OH.
