If you ever find yourself anywhere near Midland, TX, you owe it to yourself to stop at Susie’s South Forty!!!
Susie’s South Forty Midland TX
As I mentioned in my last post, which you can read here; it was our last day in Midland and we were determined to make the most of every minute. So after lunch we decided visit Susie’s South Forty candy factory, just a short drive from Get Around Brown’s fabulous BBQ.
As we walked through the front door we were greeted with the scent of chocolate, sugar and toasting nuts. Suddenly I was no longer full from lunch. I was ready to sample my way through Sally’s. And that’s exactly what we all did. In fact it was encouraged!
We tasted just about every single confection that was available. And just when we thought we had tasted it all, we were introduced to the “barks” in every flavor imaginable. But in the end, it was the Dark Chocolate Toasted Pecan Toffees that absolutely had to come home with us. And knowing that it would be quite some time before we’d be through Midland again, we bought 2 bags.
It’s not all about the confections at Susie’s South Forty. When you enter the facility you are surrounded by adorable stuffed animals and other whimsical objects. Behind that is where the magic happens. The pristine candy factory is open for view, behind glass. It was fun watching different sweets being made and packaged.
From there we wandered into the retail store. It beckoned us in with its charming decor. Lots of candy for sale and for tasting gave us motivation for strolling the aisles. It was just before Easter when we visited, so there were soft stuffed bunnies everywhere. There were also beautiful Easter baskets and dozens of foil wrapped chocolate bunnies and eggs.
It was such a fun and delicious place to spend an hour.
About Susie’s South Forty
It all began in 1876, when Susie Hitchcock-Hall began her first entrepreneurial venture. She began her career as a dancer, teaching country western dancing at various venues along with private lessons. In fact, Susie continued to teach even after she started Susie’s South Forty.
Her current business was born from a friend’s need to sell pecans. Her friend Toy Boyd approached her with the idea of using the pecans from her 800-tree pecan grove. Toy knew that Susie had a passion for cooking. And with that passion, Susie embraced the challenge of creating pecan based recipes.
Susie’s South Forty was born on November 1, 1991.
It was a struggle at first. Susie earned a mere $452 the first season. She had very little money to invest, so she bartered sweets for time on the radio, TV, and ads in the newspaper.
Her first mailing list was started by gathering contacts from her church directory, her dance students and so on. Her business began to grow, and as it did she planned work schedules around school hours allowing you mothers to work without needed to pay for childcare. And while running the candy business Susie continued to teach dance lessons every night for the first 12 years.
Susie has many accolades to be proud of. But probable the best is that she was inducted into the prestigious Texas Women’s Hall of Fame by the governor of Texas.
As I’m writing this, I realize that it has been quite a few weeks since we were there. Boy do I ever wish I still had some of that amazing toffee in my freezer. Fingers crossed that they ship to where ever we are!
