One of the attractions that we were told not to miss was the Scenic Drive in El Paso Texas. We were in El Paso just before Christmas which just added to the beauty of the drive.
The Scenic Drive El Paso Texas is only 2 miles long, but is packed with jaw dropping views. There are several overlooks where you can park to experience the beauty from your aerial view of the Franklin Mountains to the south and even see New Mexico’s Organ Mountains on the horizon in the distance. Franklin Mountain’s highest peak is 7,192-feet. But the drive is actually at an elevation of 4,222 feet offering amazing vistas.
Along our drive along this spectacular drive we saw stunning homes that were decked out with Christmas lights adding to our enjoyment of this free attraction. The overlooks offer up amazing views of all of El Paso and you can even see Ciudad Juarez in Mexico.
The view would be incredible even in daylight, on foggy days and in bad weather. I’m sure that it’s breathtaking no matter when you drive along the Scenic Drive. We took the drive at night for two reasons. The first was that we were downtown doing a little shopping and we were told it’s easy to access from downtown. Secondly, the lights of the city scape and the add joy of Christmas decorations would only be visible in the dark of night!
This drive is not for the faint of heart as it is a winding mountain road. So I caution you to drive slowly and enjoy the view no matter what time of day you go.
What made this so special was that the entire city of El Paso and most of the Chihuahuan Desert Basin spreads out below this popular vantage point on the Franklin Mountains. This is the best view of the city accessible by car. I’m sure that the Scenic Drive El Paso, Texas wows visitors ever time. I know it certainly wowed us.
And as we came down the mountain, heading back into El Paso itself, we also got to see the El Paso Star. This lit star sits at an angle of 30-degrees and appears to be perfect at its focal point at the intersection of Texas and Alameda Avenues. The poles are staggered up and down the mountain for the distance of 459-feet. The poles start at the mountain top and run down to a point about 200 feet above the Scenic Drive.
Once back downtown we enjoyed how the park took on a magical appearance decked out in so many twinkling lights to celebrate the joy of Christmas.
