Royal Scam Mobile Alabama
Steve and I just celebrated our 48th Wedding Anniversary with a much needed vacation. We much prefer road trips to flying so we packed up my little 2004 BMW convertible and headed for our favorite destination The Big Easy! Since we started our journey on our actual anniversary we decided that instead of driving straight through, as we usually do, we would go as far as Mobile, Alabama and continue on our way in the morning.
We had made reservations at a Best Western just off I-10 which was an absolutely perfect location. We easily hopped on and off I-10 to get to dinner, do some sightseeing, get some sleep and continue on our way to New Orleans. As another great perk a lovely hot breakfast was complimentary.
Never having been to Mobile we relied on the internet for somewhere to enjoy a special celebratory dinner without breaking the bank. After all we knew we would be dropping a pretty penny at all of the restaurants we wanted to go to once we reached NOLA. I found several restaurants that had good menus but only one with a name as intriguing as its menu. Royal Scam was the place we chose and we were quite happy that we did.
Royal Scam opened its doors in late 2006 as an upscale bar with a small tapas menu but soon grew into a full service down town restaurant for lunch and dinner. Owner David Rasp knows what he is doing and has wonderful staff to assist. Our server Will was an absolute delight. As a foodie himself, he was quite knowledgeable with his menu suggestions. We actually had a great conversation about food, wine and traveling. Since New Orleans is such a short drive from Mobile Will said he frequently goes for the weekend. Lucky guy!
We were seated in the courtyard which was perfect since the night was balmy and the ambiance was beautiful. Steve and I opted to share 3 appetizers and 1 dinner so we could taste as much of the menu as possible. Each dish was brought separately so we could enjoy the flavors and not be rushed. Our first taste was the fork tender Blackened Beef Tenderloin which was served a perfect medium-rare with Gorgonzola on a bed of baby greens and a delicious Balsamic Vinaigrette. Next we shared the Spicy Crab Cakes with Chipotle Remoulade which was accompanied by a salad of mixed greens with Citrus Vinaigrette. And last but certainly not least was our appetizer of Seared Ahi Tuna and Lemon Ginger Gastrique with a Spicy Mango Salad. The tuna was amazing with the spicy mango being the perfect counterpoint.
For our entree we shared the Chicken Bienville. What a great dish! Our plate was abundantly filled with grilled chicken breast, tomatoes, capers, bacon and spinach cooked in white wine and served with garlicky mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked zucchini and yellow squash. The entire entree was so flavor packed including the chicken which was well seasoned and smoky from being grilled.
After all of that food and a bottle of wine we were full, but Will made the Peanut Butter Cheesecake sound so good we had to share a piece. Oh my! It was da bomb. Just imagine rich, luscious, creamy, peanut buttery cheesecake with an Oreo cookie crust topped with Chantilly Cream and a drizzle of dark fudgy chocolate. And in case you’re wondering we did lick our plate clean. Thanks Will for treating us to dessert!
