Renovations are Complete
Way back in 1997 Steve and I bought a “fixer upper” and we spent 10 years renovating our home. For the first five years or so Steve did everything himself that he could do. We lived with polished concrete floors which were really just the slab that I spatter painted and then we applied about a dozen coats of urethane. It was so funny because people would come to our home and react in one of two ways. Either they would go “Wow how cool!” or they would say “Oh I see your getting ready to tile”. Steve replaced the ugly formica counter top in the kitchen with one he tiled himself. He put in under the cabinet task lighting and then tiled the backsplash, wall and archway leading into the kitchen. He tore down a wall. He tiled the powder room floor and put in a fabulous gold pedestal sink with 24K gold plated faucet that we bought at an architectural salvage yard for a song. He tiled the master bath floor and replaced all of the old wood slat sliding closet doors with new modern mirrored ones. But after all of that he knew that the rest of the renovations would require a contractor. Fortunately we had a friend who was a general contractor so he gave us a really good price for what was still necessary to get our home to be the showplace that it is today. He tiled the entire first floor of our home and put in hardwood floors on our stairs and loft area, which is our gym. He removed all of the “popcorn” from the ceilings and put knockdown on the walls and ceilings. I designed a 19′ wall unit and a mosaic for our kitchen floor and Joey managed to execute both designs to perfection. We added crown moulding and new baseboards and doors. Rather that list everything lets just say there isn’t a trace of the old house left except for the drywall and studs! Our home is finally finished and we have been enjoying it for a couple of years. It will be hard to leave it behind when we start our adventure next year traveling full time but at least I had a fantasy wish come true. Our home was featured in Wellington the Magazine in the September 2010 issue (beginning on page 47) and I will always be able to look at the several page spread and see how creative we were and how we transformed an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan now that the renovations are complete.
