Knowing that we were driving to and from the Jersey Shore, our dear friend Trish invited us to visit her in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. And we were thrilled to take her up on her offer on our way home!
To save time and and a good bit of driving we took the Cape May/Lewes Ferry. It had been years since we had taken the ferry and it had improved dramatically. What I remembered was rustic and what we experienced this time was anything but. Lovely booths with tables, additional rows of nicely cushioned seats and lots of TVs to watch that make the time pass quickly. The only downside on this crossing was the weather. It was stormy which made the bay quite choppy but the Captain did a great job of navigating and kept us safe. As soon as we docked we were able to disembark and drive the seven miles from Lewes to Rehoboth. Trish had warned us that summer traffic is intense but we didn’t really believe her that it could take an hour or more to reach her home. She did not exaggerate one bit!

When we got to her house she showed us to our guest suite so we could leave our luggage and we immediately left for a late lunch by the beach. Too bad it was rainy because we would have loved to walk around and see more of this charming beach town. But at least it let up enough for us to walk the 2 blocks from the car to the Indian restaurant Trish had chosen, passing adorable boutiques along the way.
Indigo was the perfect spot for our nibbles. It is a beautiful new restaurant with really great Indian cuisine. We started off with Pappadam and a trio of dipping sauces while we perused the menu. Our Chicken Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan were perfect for sharing. Since we knew we were having dinner at 8 we really just needed a little something to tide us of until then. But I know the next time we visit Rehoboth we will have a full meal at Indigo and taste more selections.
Trish took us for a drive around her neighborhood to give us a feel for the architecture and landscape. Unexpectedly we spotted two beautiful deers on the lawn right across the street from her home.
Trish had chosen Eden for dinner because it is well known for its bold American food and I must say it was a really wise decision. As you enter you feel like you are walking into a dreamy romantic spot with lots of little twinkling lights and gauzy curtains. Our booth made us feel like we were in our own private dining room with curtains that were tied back to allow for the great service that we had. It was the perfect setting for an unhurried evening of great food and conversation.
We started with appetizers of Shrimp Pad Thai and Eden’s Grilled Caesar. The Pad Thai was one of the best Steve and I had ever tasted with beautifully cooked plump succulent shrimp and lots of great sauce with the added crunch of peanuts. Their Caesar is quite different from most and not just because of grilling the Romaine. The smoky Romaine is garnished with sun-dried tomatoes, olive tapenade and Pecorino.
For our entrées Steve chose the Roasted Center Cut Filet Mignon that was napped with a luscious Demi-Glace and served with Whipped Potatoes and Haricots Vert. His filet was melt in your mouth tender. Trish ordered the Vegetarian Enchiladas which were decadently rich and flavorful. And even though I was rigorously teased about eating the deer we had just seen, I had the Broken Arrow Ranch Venison Chops which were amazing and perfectly paired with Sweet Corn Spoon Bread, Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Bacon and Local Berry Compote. The chops were tender, ever so slightly gamey and full of flavor.
With our meal we enjoyed a truly wonderful wine but for a very funny reason. I noticed that they had Chateauneuf du Pape and that reminded me of an old TV show that we used to watch called Trapper John, M.D. Two of the doctors Trapper John and Gonzo Gates used to sit in beach chairs on the roof of Gonzo’s RV and drink a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape at the end of their shift in almost every episode. And since neither Steve nor I had ever tasted it Trish ordered a bottle. It was so delicious with intense, black and red fruits, spices and pepper, and soft with refined tannins! It was good to the very last drop which we finished with our dessert – EDEN’S Key Lime Pie.
True to their other dishes this was not your typical key lime pie. It had a graham cracker and sunflower seed crust and it was enhanced by the tart sweet fresh local berry sauce and yummy freshly whipped cream.
Oh yeah, we can’t wait to revisit Rehoboth Beach, Delaware so we can spend more time there visiting with friends and enjoying the wonderful cuisines.
