We were able to visit a couple more highly recommended locations by driving from Petaluma to Point Reyes California.

Scenes like this are everywhere as we drove from Petaluma to Point Reyes California

It was one of those picture perfect days in California. Steve and I headed out from our campground in Santa Rosa and drove to Petaluma to pick up lunch at Mr. Pickles Sandwich Shop.

Something fun to look at in every direction at Mr. Pickles Sandwich Shop

At that time, early February, California restaurants were under a very strict “take out only” order. Eating in the car is not ideal, but sandwiches seem to be perfect for the situation. At Mr. Pickles the sandwich choices were quite varied and all were delicious sounding. That made for a difficult decision but somehow we managed to make perfect selections.

Steve’s sandwich was called The Intimidator!

My Travis Pastrami on Rye

Steve chose The Intimidator! It was a beautifully composed sandwich of ham, Genoa salami, mortadella, provolone, lettuce and tomato dressed with an Italian vinaigrette on a crusty roll. For me it was the Travis Pastrami that had my name on it. Tender and flavorful hot pastrami, coleslaw and Swiss cheese on rye bread. Oh. And of course they both came with pickles. You would expect that from a place named Mr. Pickles. Wouldn’t you?

Point Reyes

We could smell the deli meats enticing us all the way to our destination of Point Reyes! It was really difficult to resist the temptation to pull off the road and just devour our lunch. But somehow we managed to wait. The anticipation made them taste that much better.

Both of our sandwiches were very yummy. In fact they were so good that we very reluctantly shared a taste. In fact, Steve’s glare made me quite cautious about the size of my bite. And you really could not beat the view we had looking out over the coast at the Pacific Ocean!

Cowgirl Creamery

At last we find the Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes. Alas they were not open!

For me, one of the reasons that I was excited to visit Point Reyes was Cowgirl Creamery. I have read so much about their cheeses and couldn’t wait to taste them. Unfortunately we chose the wrong day of the week to shop there. Oh well. I guess that means we must return another day when we know they are open for business.

Since Cowgirl Creamery was closed we headed back to the beach at Point Reyes National Seashore.

Oh Deer! These sweet animals were roaming along the coastal grassland in Point Reyes.

It’s time for a little llama or two, up close and personal.

What really surprised us there was that there were animal farms right along the ocean. We saw a dairy farm with lots of beautiful cows. There were sweet deer roaming the rolling hills. But the most astonishing was the Llama farm. It was just so unexpected to see these wooly creatures roaming the grassy hills along the ocean!

A cow lying on the grass and a coyote checking out what he killed Petaluma to Point Reyes California

We even saw a coyote checking out his kill. It was a little creepy. But I guess it’s all part of the circle of life. What was curious was that the coyote was pretty close to some cows that were relaxing nearby. The cows seemed completely oblivious to the hungry coyote.
