I’m sure by now you know me well enough to not be shocked that a dish could be on my Bucket List. While visiting our friends in Sulphur Springs TX, I mentioned that I had never eaten Chicken Fried Steak. Sandee and Mack were astonished, and made sure to rectify that right away. Our first taste of Chicken Fried Steak did not disappoint!
We went to our friends’ favorite place for a very filling lunch – White Oak City Limits – in the adorable downtown of Sulphur Springs. The owner immediately welcomed us as if we were lifelong friends. Once seated there was no mistaking that we were in a restaurant in Texas. Fun art and trinkets adorned the walls and the ambiance was rustic cowboy.

All four of us ordered the exact same thing, except that Steve had French Fries instead of Mashed Potatoes. Our plates were abundantly covered with a big piece of Chicken Fried Steak, a scoop of creamy mashed potatoes, a cup of peppery white gravy and a roll. And since our lunch came with 2 sides, we chose the side salad which was fresh and tasty with our choice of dressings.
So by now you are probably wondering “Just what is Chicken Fried Steak? It is a slice of Top Round that is pounded into submission to tenderize it and then battered exactly like chicken is done for Fried Chicken. Then it’s submerged into hot oil and deep fried. It’s quite tasty. We all got our gravy on the side to allow the crunchy crust to stay nice and crisp. But even dunked in the rich white gravy, that coating remained pleasantly crunchy.
And who could resist bathing those mashed potatoes with that delicious gravy? Yum!
We were all stuffed, but our server insisted on treating us to a taste of their two desserts that were prepared by the other server working at the restaurant. Oh boy, were we ever glad to taste those pies.
The first was a very southern traditional Buttermilk Pie that was not too sweet and had that slightly sour tang of buttermilk. The other was an etherial Lemon Ice Box Pie that was light as air, lemony and topped off with fresh whipped cream.
By the time we left the restaurant we were so full that we knew we’d be eating very, very little for dinner that night. But Steve and I were so happy to have finally had our first taste of Chicken Fried Steak. I’m sure it won’t be our last!
