Our Day in Idaho Falls ID was filled with wonderful highlights. Deciding to take the hour plus drive from Ashton to Idaho Falls was an easy one – we desperately needed a Costco run!
Our Day in Idaho Falls ID
But before shopping at Costco we decided to explore the downtown area and stop for a bite to eat. The charming downtown Idaho Falls was filled with wonderful boutiques and many restaurants. I’d read good things about SnakeBite so we let our GPS guide us to its location. What our GPS didn’t know, was that many of the streets were completely torn up due to major construction. But we were determined and after many detours, parked about a block and a half away, enjoying our stroll on a glorious day.
SnakeBite Restaurant
The SnakeBite Restaurant is located in heart of charming and historic downtown Idaho Falls. After perusing the menu, we could certainly understand why it is a local favorite for burgers, brews and all sorts of other noshes. It was even voted one of the best restaurants in the area!
Our Lunch
Steve and I decided to try a couple of their yummy sounding menu items that were really listed as appetizers, but together created an awesome lunch. We ordered the Mesa Falls Fries and the Coconut Prawns. It was a combination that was made for each other.
The Mesa Falls Fries are their famous signature house-seasoned waffle fries served with fry sauce. The fries were perfect. All of those nooks and crannies that cutting them waffle style created a nicely crispy exterior with a lovely creamy interior. And dipping them in the fry sauce, that was reminiscent of Outback’s Bloomin’ Onion sauce, was the absolutely perfect crowning touch.
The Coconut Prawns were amazing. First off, they use lovely large prawns and then they dip them in batter and roll them in lots of coconut before frying them to perfection. Served with a tangy and sweet house made honey mustard for dipping, which surely enhanced the flavor of the prawns which were fabulous to begin with.
Idaho Falls
After the perfect lunch at SnakeBite, we headed to The Falls that give Idaho Falls its name.
Idaho Falls was once known as Eagle Rock until 1891. Eagle Rock had been named in reference to rocky islands and rapids in the middle of the Snake River. But in 1891 the name was changed to Idaho Falls.
In 1912, city leaders tamed the turbulent waters of the Snake River and built a dam along the falls to diver water to a new hydroelectric plant. It was the city’s first run-of-water electric plant and helped to meet the power needs of the rapidly growing community. And in 1976, after the Teton Dam disaster, the city rebuilt part of the riverbed and diversion dam, creating the iconic falls we visited.
The Falls are in the heart of the city and part of the Idaho Falls River Walk, which consists of the falls and 14 miles of river bank. The River Walk allows for biking, jogging, fishing and great photography. This beautiful area is enjoyed by the city’s almost 60,000 residents as well as tourists like The Traveling Locavores.
This post brings back some good memories of when we stayed in Idaho Falls on a 3-week travel vacation. We were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it was. Next stop…Jackson, WY, and then Yellowstone.
Thanks, Sandy. Pleasant travels to you and Steve.
That makes me so happy Joe! It was really a lovely place to visit. And for us it was followed by Yellowstone and then Jackson.
Hope you are not freezing where you are. Right now we’re back in South Florida for the next 2 months, enjoying the warmth and sunshine.
