My Favorite Attractions in Charleston
One of the reasons Steve and I enjoy visiting Charleston, SC so much is that we always find exploring this city so rich in history so fascinating.
Over the years we have visited Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, located in Mount Pleasant at the mouth of the Cooper River on the Charleston Harbor, where you can tour the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier, the USS Laffey Destroyer, the USS Clamagore submarine, the 10 most significant aircraft in US carrier aviation history, the Vietnam Experience Exhibit and the Medal of Honor Museum. We spent an entire day at Magnolia Plantation and half a day at Boone Hall Plantation. Plus we have ambled the streets and alleys of the peninsula visiting art galleries and shops.
On our latest trip to Charleston we finally took the tour of Fort Sumter. This is one I highly recommend! The only way to get to Fort Sumter is by boat so we took the lovely ride on a glorious afternoon. Our guide gave us a fabulous history lesson en route and since we were the last visitors of the day we got to participate in the flag folding ceremony. I don’t know how many of you have ever witnessed a flag folding ceremony but when completed the flag forms a triangle. The first time I watched it being done I realized that I knew exactly how they were accomplishing this. It is the very same way you fold the strips of phyllo for those lovely Greek spinach and feta hors d’oeuvre Spanakopita. Forgive me but I am, after all, a true foodie. Holding “Old Glory” actually gave me the chills it was such an awe inspiring and emotional experience. It made me think of all of those heroes who have fought to preserve our freedoms and how lucky we are to be living in the United States of America!
