How many of you remember this cute guy? He’s Nipper, the RCA Victor mascot.

Nashville is known as Music City, but most of us think of it as the Country Music City. When we visited the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, it opened our eyes, and ears, to the fact that Nashville is all about music. Every. Single. Kind of music!!! And it is awesome.

The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum Nashville is so multifaceted. You get to discover the stories behind not only the headliners but the session musicians, engineers and producers. There are so many different exhibits that it would literally take a couple of days to truly experience all of them.

Each exhibit tells the story of a musician that you may have heard but may have never seen. Our visit to the Musicians Hall of Fame was a highlight of our visit to Nashville. It’s the one and only museum in the world that honors the talented musicians who actually played on the greatest recordings of all time.

About the Museum

At the Musicians Hall of Fame it’s not only the stars who are well known to the public that are recognized, but the musicians who played on so many hit records as studio players.

I know this is hard to imagine but, for example, The Monkees, sang on their records but used the same group of studio musicians as The Beach Boys on their most famous recordings.  These same players recorded with Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Dean Martin and Elvis Presley.

The museum houses the instruments used on hundreds of these iconic recordings. For example, Joe Osborn’s Fender jazz bass used on all The Carpenters records, Mamas and the Papas, The Grass Roots, Simon and Garfunkel to name a few while in California and many more country hits after moving to Nashville such as “Lucille” by Kenny Rogers.

In 2016 the museum inducted Garth Brooks and The G-Men, his studio musician.  The G-Men have played on virtually every record Garth Brooks has recorded from 1988 until now. The G-Men have also individually recorded with Elvis, Crystal Gayle, George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

The Musicians Hall of Fame Nashville houses the control board from Jack’s Tracks Recording Studio where Garth recorded most of his hits, as well as instruments from all the G-Men. It also houses instruments Garth used in the studio that you have heard on over 70 million albums to date that his fans have purchased.

The GRAMMY Gallery

The GRAMMY Experience

A photo of George Benson, and 2 other musicians receiving Grammy Awards in 1977

My favorite Jazz musician, George Benson, received 3 GRAMMYs in 1977! And he was in very good company.

The GRAMMY Award is synonymous with musical excellence. Winning one has nothing at all to do with sales, chart success or popularity. It is, however, the result of a very scrupulous voting process carried out by music industry peers. GRAMMYs are awarded annually to musicians, producers, songwriters, recording engineers. and other music professionals. To receive one is to be accorded the highest honor in the recording arts.

When the first GRAMMYs were presented in 1959 there were only a handful of Award categories. Now, there are over 80 which reflects the vitality of music and its significance as one of our greatest cultural treasures.

The GRAMMY Gallery at Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum is an interactive facility for visitors. It allows guests to explore the history of the GRAMMY Awards. This exhibit gives all ages the opportunity to be onstage and interact with every aspect of the recording process.

There is a replica of Elvis Presley’s studio where he recorded his biggest records such as Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto and more. Also on display are Glen Campbell’s guitars that he played on his nationally broadcast TV show and as a session musician in the early 60s. There’s a huge display that pays tribute to the late, great Jimi Hendrix that includes one of hiStratocaster guitar’s and the stage he performed on in Nashville. In addition, you will find James Jamerson’s actual Fender P-Bass, Steve Lukather’s original Les Paul guitar given to him by his father and instruments used by Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, Elton John and so much more.

A tribute to Motown

A photo of a man in a recording studio at the Musicians Hall of Fame Nashville

The founder of Motown, Berry Gordy Jr.

Most of the music that Steve and I grew up with came from Motown, also known as Hitsville USA. I was lucky enough to have been at a New Year’s Eve party thrown by the head of Motown Berry Gordy Jr. It was one of my greatest thrills to party with the likes of Diana Ross and the Supremes, Little Anthony and Aretha Franklin in Miami Beach and ring in 1968 with my musical idols!!!

HItsville USA is the nickname given to Motown’s first headquarters, located at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan. Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. purchased the property in 1959.

The fabulous exhibit at the Musicians Hall of Fame Nashville is an awesome re-creation of Motown’s first recording studio and headquarters. In the actual property the first floor contained the offices and recording studio and the Gordy family lived upstairs. The studio operated 22 hours a day and was only closed for 2 hours to perform daily maintenance!

In 2006 on our first long RV trip we had a chance to visit Hitsville USA and it was awesome. We plan on returning for another visit next summer.

As you can tell by all of the photos, Steve and I spent hours touring each of the exhibits. I could go on and on with many more photos but won’t because I really want you to experience for yourselves.
