After the exciting art show featuring paintings of my uncle and cousin, we had dinner at Moonlark’s Dinette at The Hoxton in downtown LA.
Since Wallace May’s art exhibit was at the stunning Hoxton hotel, we decided to fill our bellies right there. Moonlark’s Dinette is right on the first floor and has a wonderful retro vibe that you’d expect in a diner. But it was a bit more upscale than your typical diner.
Moonlark’s diner is a place where that relaxed atmosphere of your favorite childhood diner meets West Coast quality, products and preparation. Their attention to detail is beyond reproach.
Since it was already quite late, we were all ravenous, but didn’t want anything too heavy. The menu offered so many options that were perfect for us that we immediately requested a booth.
The heavily padded dark red booths were so comfy that you could easily lie down and fall asleep. But we were hungry and couldn’t wait to eat something placed in front of us on the beautiful marble table! Another quick look at the menu and we all knew exactly what we wanted to order.
All Gail had to see was the tuna sandwich and she was ready to order. Then Steve and Bruce followed suit. All of them added bacon and a side of fries.
I, on the other hand, found something entirely different calling my name. It was breakfast for dinner. The Latke + Smoked Salmon totally intrigued me and I had to order it. While the others totally enjoyed their tuna salad and bacon sandwiches with pickles and iceberg lettuce on griddled challah, I was devouring my dish.
Don’t get me wrong. I love a good tuna sandwich. And the one served at Moonlark’s Dinette was really, really good. Adding the bacon made the sandwich just about as perfect as it could be, especially between two gloriously griddled slice of challah! The fries I tasted from everyone else’s plate were absolutely DE-LISH!!!
But my crispy potato latke, topped with an ample amount of silky smoke salmon, cucumber relish, poached egg, crème fraîche and pickled red onion, was so mouthwateringly good that I couldn’t put my fork down!!! It was such a fabulous combination of flavors that I just kept eating until my plate was clean.
