Our next stop on our journey of full time RV living was the Mesa Regal RV Resort in, you guessed it, Mesa Arizona.
Mesa Regal RV Resort was really an ideal location. But more than that it was the kind of place we could see ourselves spending a couple of winter months. This 55 and over community had lots of RV sites interspersed with Park Model homes. And at each and every site there was either an Orange, Lemon or Grapefruit tree. The best part was that all of the fruit was ripe while we stayed there. And we were encouraged to pluck as many pieces of citrus as we wanted.
I use a good bit of citrus in my cooking. So it was so awesome to just go out and pick a couple of lemons when I needed them. And nothing tastes quite as good as taking a piece of fruit right of the tree and eating it. I ate as much grapefruit as I could. They were ruby red inside. Plus they were so sweet and juicy that they didn’t need a speck of sugar.
Fresh citrus was just one of the many perks of staying at Mesa Regal RV Resort. For the most part they don’t allow RVs older than 10 years. But they do make exceptions if you submit photos and your coach is approved. Ladybug is a youthful 2004 and passed inspection with flying colors. Not to sound like a snob, but it really is much nicer when you are staying in a place that has no beat up old eyesores hanging out. It makes for that homey and beautiful neighborhood feel.
Mesa Regal RV Resort offers all of the amenities that most parks have like laundry, bath houses, pool etc. But they also have extras that make you want to stay forever. The main pool is at the clubhouse and has hot tubs in a very tropical setting that includes a fabulous tiki bar and restaurant. The offer classes and all sorts of fun activities. There’s an actual post office on site! And each site has both trash and recycling containers with scheduled pick up. Just like living in a bricks and sticks home, you put your can at the curb. This is so much nicer than having to haul your trash to a dumpster on a regular basis.
We were there the week leading up to Christmas and one evening there was a fantastic, socially distanced poolside party complete with a live band and a visit from Santa. It was so awesome to dance, drink and be merry with so many people and still feel safe from getting Covid. The band was behind a huge plastic screen and everyone stayed masked unless they were drinking or eating.
And speaking of eating…Steve and I were craving some really good Jewish pastrami. My cousin Donna had told us about a place in Tempe called Chompie’s so the afternoon of Christmas eve we decided to go there for lunch. And wow. Those sandwiches were piled high with juicy, well spiced hot pastrami anointed with coleslaw and Russian dressing all between two slices of seeded rye bread and accompanied by delicious French fries. The sandwiches were so huge that we could only manage half a sandwich each. Not to worry. We finished them at dinner.
In fact, it was perfect that I didn’t have to worry about making dinner because there was a Holiday Parade to enjoy. This was not your usual parade though. All of the residents who had golf carts decorated them in holiday regalia. They lined up at the clubhouse and began parading up and down each street at the resort. Steve and I moved our chairs to the curb and with cocktails in hand we watched as the carts passed by. It really put us in the holiday spirit as people on the carts wished us Happy Holidays and threw beads and candy. And Hershi was happy to bark holiday wishes back at them!
Mesa Regal RV Resort is part of Cal Am Properties that own a dozen parks in the area. And we are looking forward to checking out some of the others in the future.
