From New York Capital of Food we continue west on our virtual culinary tour around the world. Our destination this time is Los Angeles Cult Recipes (Affiliate Link)
The great thing about traveling around the world without leaving your house is that there is no jet lag to deal with! Could you imagine if we were really traveling from New York to Asia, the Middle East, Canada, back to New York and then California how exhausted we would be? The beauty of the journey that I have been guiding you on is that you have the opportunity to learn so many cultures, locales and cuisines. We only have one more stop after our layover in Los Angeles.
California Dreaming
Within the pages of Los Angeles Cult Recipes by Victor Garnier Astorino you will visit the city of California dreams. There are over 100 recipes that capture the spirit of the City of Angels. Victor captures snapshots of this glittering city with eclectic tastes. He took all of the photos with an analog camera, not knowing what the shots would look like until he returned to France!
Where fusion food began
This book contains recipes for chilli hotdogs that are unlike anything you have ever tasted. There are also avocado cheeseburgers, granola, lobster rolls, French-style tacos – the author is French after all, fro-yo, kale pizza, açaí bowls and shrimp pad Thai!. Angelenos worship at the temple of the healthy green juice while at the same time worshiping at the alter of the hamburger. From food trucks and vegan coffee shops, doughnuts, hot dogs and noodles, to the original California roll – this is where fusion food had its beginning.
Los Angeles is home to some of the most creative and healthy food in the world. Restaurant menus seem totally freed from convention. But it is most likely the meeting of the city’s many cultures, combined with certain American eating habits, that produces these extraordinary ideas. Where else but in LA would it be normal to eat a Thai pizza or order a Korean taco?
Open doors welcome
While visiting Los Angeles the author found that no door was ever closed. Wherever he was, even when it wasn’t a good time, he was given a chance. Never did he encounter a negative response from anyone he approached, He discovered something truly wonderful. Victor says: “I feel once you throw yourself (or lose yourself) in something that makes you happy, people don’t judge you, whatever it is. This is a city that lets people live their dream.
