Little Duck Diner, Savannah, was highly recommended to us by both couples that we met at CreekFire RV Resort and Ranch. And it surely did not disappoint!
Location
Since restaurants have started reopening across America we have been wary about dining out. The only place we feel comfortable is where we can dine outdoors with lots of room between tables. We were assured by our friends that we could dine alfresco, so we headed to downtown Savannah. We found a great, free parking spot on the street in the City Market area and our GPS told us we were only 600-feet from Little Duck Diner, so we were thrilled. After walking up and down the main street several times we realized that we were on the wrong street. So we walked a half a block to the next street and continued walking back and forth until, at last, we found our destination. And we were practically just across from where we had started!
Asian/Souther fusion
By the time we were seated at our table outside we were exhausted and starving. And in true Traveling Locavores form we ordered a bunch of dishes to share at this Asian/Southern fusion establishment. As stated on their website, “The Little Duck Diner is a ‘vintage chic diner’ reminiscent of dining cars and diners of the late 20’s and 30’s with a contemporary twist. Inspired by our ‘little ducklings’, our children, the diner embodies the youthfulness within all of us with the refinement and quirks of an era from which the ‘Diner’ as we know it was born.”
And we were happy it was. Also the view of the old buildings while dining outside was wonderful. They reminded me of the brick buildings on 4th Street in Philadelphia, where my grandparents built their business and home in the 1920s after escaping Czarist Russia.
Our Meal
We started off with the BBQ Duck Egg Rolls which were huge and really stuffed with succulent duck along with a small amount of vegetables. These egg rolls were amazing on their own and even better with the BBQ sauce that tasted of hoisin and kimchi. For our entrées we ordered the Wicked Burger topped with melted Havarti cheese and served with French Fries because I had a real craving for a juicy burger. And we also ordered The Ritz, which is a tacos loaded with shrimp, lettuce, avocado, pickled carrots, daikon, sriracha mayo and cilantro. Both of those dishes were really delicious, but the flavor of those tacos still lingers in my mind.
Dessert for later
When our delightful server Janna asked if we wanted dessert we were really too stuffed to eat any. So we did the smart thing and took home a slice of Little Duck Diner’s Lemon Cake. Our only mistake, and this is a big one folks, is that we only took home one slice!!! It was hands down the best lemon cake we have ever tasted. It was light and fluffy and oh so lemony with lemon frosting and filling. I really wish I could get my hands on the recipe for that lemon cake. I guess we will just have to return to Little Duck Diner on our next trip to Savannah.
