Happy Labor Day and Rosh Hashana Well, that’s a phrase I have rarely said in one sentence! This year the High Holy Days begin at sundown on Labor Day!
Happy Rosh Hashana
I remember many years ago that I commented to our Rabbi that Rosh Hashana was very early that year. His response was that it was at exactly the right time. After all, the Jewish Holidays are based on the Hebrew Calendar which is quite different from the one we use in secular life. We have leap year with an extra day. The Jewish calendar has a whole extra month!
Rosh Hashana is the celebration of the new year. Again, totally different calendar. It is traditional to ear sweet foods, like apples dipped in honey, for a sweet year.
Happy Labor Day
Labor Day is a totally different kind of celebration. But still celebrated with food. It seems it has become the unofficial end of summer. We have backyard barbecues with friends and family and enjoy an extra day off from work
Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. Following the deaths of 13 workers during the Pullman Strike in June of 1894, President Grover Cleveland made reconciliation with the labor movement a top political priority, and Labor Day become a federal holiday in 1894.
Happy New Year you two!!
Thanks so much Donna! I hope you are doing well and enjoying life in Stuart. We are enjoying our life on the road. This country is so beautiful and we have made new friends along the way. So now we have lots of people to visit as we traverse the country.
Stay well!
