Immersive, or digital, art experiences seem to be all the rage these days. And the one we went to – Gustav Klimt: The Immersive Experience – was outstanding!

The Kiss by Gustav Klimt

One day last summer I got a surprise phone call from my cousin Gail who lives in California. Yup. She’s the one we love visiting in Redlands. I was in line to check out at the supermarket when she called to tell me that tickets were going on sale for the Klimt Immersive Experience for a show near Los Angeles that was occurring while we were going to be in Cali. She wanted to know if we wanted to join her and her husband. Of course we did!!!

As soon as I got back to Ladybug, I put the date on our calendar. At the time it seemed so far in the future. And suddenly, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, it was February and we were back in Redlands. YAY.

Moving Water made us feel like the room was flooding.

The long drive to L.A. gave us plenty of time to catch Gail and Frank up on all of the place we had visited since we saw them last. And because it was just outside of L.A. it was easy to park at the exhibit’s location.

My cousins had been to one of these digital art experience in Europe and they had been enthralled by it. But for Steve and I, it was all new and exciting. What an awesome way to enjoy an artist’s body of work.

In case you are not familiar with this artist, according to Wikipedia “Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d’art. Klimt’s primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism.”

Gustav Klimt: The Immersive Experience was created by the same partnership between Exhibition Hub and Fever that brought Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience to life. The show displays more than 200 works by Klimt in a mind-boggling floor-to-ceiling, 360-degree format. There’s also a 10-minute virtual reality experience that chronicles the breadth of Klimt’s career, from his humble beginnings as an interior decorator to all the dazzling glory of his Golden Period. Klimt: The Immersive Experience made its debut in Miami, but there are plenty of other cities scheduled to catch the show. We went to the one in Montebello, CA.

Ah, The Kiss

The Kiss is probably Gustav Klimt’s most well known work!

The Kiss. So beautiful and romantic. Composed of a man and woman locked in an eternal embrace on a bed of flowers. The Kiss is one of the most iconic art nouveau paintings and arguably one of the most romantic pieces of art ever created. Austrian artist Gustav Klimt painted it at the height of his Golden Period. It contains many of the artist’s signatures: heavy symbolism, erotic undertones, and decorative embellishments of gold leaf, platinum, and silver.

Now Klimt fans can experience The Kiss (1907) and other works like Judith and the Head of Holofernes (1901) at three different immersive digital art experiences opening in cities across North America in 2022. Even if you have never heard of Gustav Klimt you will fall in love with his art. Just be sure to find out more about when and where each show is happening and how to get tickets before they sell out!
