Last week my dear friend Laura and I decided that we needed some retail therapy. Since that requires lots of energy we decided to have lunch first and went to George’s Bistro and Bar Houston TX.
Laura had been there for lunch once before when her brother came for a visit. Since she had remarked how delicious it was, I thought it was a reliable place for our lunch. And lucky for us, Steve was more than happy to tag along and act as our driver for the day.
As we drove the route from Pearland to the West University neighborhood of Houston, we ogled mansion after mansion. One huge home more beautiful than then last. Before we knew it, we had arrived at George’s Bistro!
It was a gorgeous day in early March with the temperature in the mid 70s, so we opted to enjoy our lunch on the outdoor patio. Both the dining room and patio dining were beautiful and a bit rustic. Indoors there were dark woods and stone. Outdoors was bright and airy with rattan tables and chairs under an awning with live vines blurring the parking lot view.
Our server informed us that on weekends (it was a Saturday) they normally serve brunch, but if we wanted something more lunchy, she was sure the chef would accommodate. Steve and I really wanted lunch and Laura decided on something from the brunch menu.
Laura ordered the Pancake Sandwich, but requested it to be “deconstructed”. She got exactly what she asked for. On her plate were two fluffy pancakes, soft velvety scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and a good sized bowl of fresh seasonal fruit.
Steve and I decided to share a big bowl of the soup du jour, which was Tomato Basil; and the wood-fired Terra Pizza. The soup was so luscious with its creamy, deep roasted tomato flavor and a kiss of fresh basil. What was really cool was that there was a lovely slice of grilled garlic bread perched on the side of the bowl. They cleverly sliced partway into the thickness of the bread so that it stayed perfectly situated on the rim of the soup bowl.
We had only eaten a few spoonfuls of our Tomato Basil Soup when our pizza came to the table. There is something about a wood-fired pizza that makes it extra tasty. The Terra was loaded with shiitake, cremini and oyster mushrooms, smoked gouda, fiore di latte, ricotta and prosciutto. And all of that was anointed with a balsamic drizzle. Perfection on a pizza pan!
Our soup was so filling and delicious that we could only manage to eat half of the 12-inch pizza, so we took the rest home. But we managed to scrape every last drop humanly possible from our bowl of Tomato Basil Soup!!!
Owners George, John and Sarah Haddad opened George’s Bistro and Bar Houston TX in 2022, with a goal to serve outstanding Mediterranean, Italian and American cuisine. With Executive Chef Fernando Huerta at the helm of the kitchen they have succeeded in doing just that! Steve and I look forward to many return visits to this little gem of a restaurant in downtown Houston.
