After a long drive from Galveston Island, we arrived at La Hacienda RV Park (now known as Sun Outdoors Travis Lake) in the Hudson Bend neighborhood of fabulous Austin, Texas. It was a little late in the day for sightseeing, so we just explored the campgrounds to see what our home base would be like for the week.
It was quite impressive! We were off to a good start. In fact, if Austin wasn’t so far away from Brian and Eve, we might consider it for a long term stay. Plus we still have so much more of the United States that we want to see.
This RV Resort boasts a swimming pool, dog park, 4-hole chip and putt, playground and a stunning special events pavilion. There was even a really cool car show while we were there. The location was pretty great too. Close to shopping, restaurants and easy access to the highway to visit downtown Austin, which is the capitol of the lone star state.
One of the highlights of our time in fabulous Austin Texas, was touring the beautiful Capitol building. The grounds and the structure was elegant and stately (no pun intended) We loved the memorials to Texas heroes because they were so beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time.
I think the memorial that I found the greatest emotional connection to was the Vietnam Veterans Monument. I suppose it’s because I had several classmates who fought in that war. And even a few who never made it home.
The Vietnam War also changed the course of Steve’s life. After Boot Camp in the Navy, he wanted to go to flight school. But he was told that his assignment would be in Nam. He had always dreamed of being a pilot. But he opted for Air Control School instead so that he could stay stateside and out of harms way. I know, I for one, am very happy with his decision!!!
Inscribed on the monument art these words: “Honoring the men and women of Texas who served with courage and dignity in the Armed Forces of the United States of America during the Vietnam War. Entombed herein are the names of 3,417 Texans who gave their lives so that others might be free. Welcome Home.”
The rotunda inside the capitol building was spectacular. The soaring domed ceiling accentuated this amazing area. Offices for state business are down corridors that come off of the rotunda like spokes of a wheel. This was truly an awe inspiring structure. But I would expect nothing less from the great state of Texas.
Driving home to Ladybug, we couldn’t help but remark on the beauty of the area. Downtown Austin had some of the most architecturally unique buildings we have ever seen. And the natural beauty of Hill Country took our breath away as we drove closer to Lake Travis and the J.J. Mansfield Hydroelectric Dam. Steve and I also enjoyed strolling though Mansfield Dam Park.
We have spent a good bit of time in the great big state of Texas over the 20+ months we have been on the road. But I feel like we haven’t even touched the surface. I guess that’s why we keep coming back to the Lone Star State!!!
