Eating Our Way Through New Orleans
Once again I must apologize for my absence of posting. Steve and I were busy preparing for a party this past Saturday at our home. What with all of the cooking and all that needed to be done my writing fell by the wayside. I will share the details of the party at a later date but I have much to tell you before I get to that. And above all else I need to finish about our summer trip to our favorite vacation city – New Orleans!
With only two days left of our pilgrimage to NOLA we had to make sure that we got to Domilise’s and that they would be open this time. Fortunately everyone showed up for work that day so we headed over to Annunciation Street for our very favorite Po’ Boys. They haven’t been voted “Best Po’ Boys in New Orleans” for no good reason. Lunchtime is usually pretty crowded but I guess late June is not the busiest for tourism to the Crescent City so there was no line outside. Domilise’s only has a handful of tables and a few bar stools so we were lucky a couple was getting ready to leave as we walked in. I held down the fort while Steve ordered our lunch. Since we never can decide between the Oyster and the Spicy Smoked Sausage Po’ Boys we ordered one of each, fully dressed and cut in half. That way we could have a half of each delectable sandwich. I mean really. Look at the picture. Don’t you wish you could dig in to that right now? Domilise’s is a family run landmark. They have fresh bread delivered several times during each day. Barq’s Root Beer and Zapp’s Potato Chips are local treats that only serve to enhance the flavor of their fabulous Po’ Boys.
Stuffed to the gills we needed to walk off lunch so we headed to the most idyllic spot in the city. New Orleans Audubon Park is complete with a golf course, an awesome variety of birds, gorgeous tranquil ponds and a walking/biking path that circles the entire park. For the most part it is shaded by huge trees and surrounded by gorgeous large homes. It is also just across the street from the zoo but it was too hot to go to the zoo. We did visit the zoo a few years ago in the winter time and enjoyed every minute. Located in the Garden District and close to Tulane and Loyola Universities, Audubon Park opened in 1898 on the site of the World Cotton Centennial in 1884. Named after artist and naturalist John James Audubon who lived in New Orleans starting in 1821, the park features a 1.8 paved loop for joggers, cyclists, and roller bladers and several covered shelters ideal for a family reunion or a simple gathering with friends and family.
Hot and exhausted we returned to our hotel for our usual rejuvenating dip in the pool. Renewed and revitalized we chose one of our very favorite spots for dining – Restaurant August which is one of native son John Besh’s fabulous restaurants.
What a delightful and delicious experience. As gorgeous as the restaurant is with its towering ceiling and huge fresh floral arrangements, it is just as unpretentious! And the service is impeccable. We were very well taken care of by our Captain Ronan and our server Michael. And the plates were little works of art and not just for the way they are presented. Each and every dish was tantalizingly tasty. From the amuse bouche to the desserts the flavors seemed to intensify.
