It had been years since we had visit the state capitol of our birth state, Harrisburg PA. We wanted to start our day of exploring with pastries, as we love to do. As soon as I saw that there was a Duck Donuts in nearby Mechanicsburg PA, I knew I didn’t need to search any further.
Now, how did we get from Indianapolis to Harrisburg, you ask? On our journey to the Pennsylvania State Capitol, we stopped to visit a friend in Langeloth, PA, south of Pittsburgh. Not much to report from that area other than a sightseeing drive through eastern Ohio and a bit of West Virginia. The countryside is beautiful in that part of the country. There are lots of rolling hills and farms, plus cool interesting sights.
But it’s very rural. I’m not sure that I saw a supermarket while we were there. It makes me so happy to be able to have a well stocked pantry and a large enough fridge to sustain us for a week or so. However, I was very happy to get to our RV park in Harrisburg with easy access to my favorite local stores.
Duck Donuts Mechanicsburg PA
It was a pretty short drive from our RV park to Duck Donuts Mechanicsburg PA. As we got out of the car my nostrils were filled with the intoxicating scent of donuts frying. Steve and I couldn’t wait to get inside and make our selections, so we followed our noses through the front door..
We decided to get a half dozen since we already know how good they are. The first two choices were no brainers. We had fallen in love with the Maple Bacon and the Chocolate Caramel Crunch. For our third choice, after much deliberation, we selected a super simple but uber delicious Cinnamon Sugar donut.
We took our box of donuts outside to enjoy our breakfast al fresco. Which did we savor for breakfast? The Maple Bacon, of course! Because bacon and maple syrup = breakfast. Right?
More about Duck Donuts
Their website tells it best:
It all began on the sandy beaches of the Outer Banks in Duck, North Carolina. There, Founder Russ DiGilio and his family would enjoy relaxing and fun vacations. But something was missing – there was no place to get that sweet staple of happiness – a warm, fresh donut! So, they decided to create their own which led to the first Duck Donuts opening in 2007. Now, you can enjoy the taste of the Outer Banks in your backyard by visiting one of our 100+ locations across the country!”
The company is dedicated to making guests’ experience a happy one. Guests are treated like family. They pride themselves in being engaged with the community they serve.
Duck Donuts also believes in being part of every community where they have a donut shop. They do that with their Quack Gives Back program. In September, each year since becoming a sponsor in 2017, Duck Donuts partners with Gabe’s Chemo Duck Program. This not for profit organization provides education, hope and comfort through stuffed, medical play and therapeutic tools. Due to this national sponsorship children that are undergoing treatment for cancer can have access to their very own Chemo Duck. I can picture this stuffed yellow duck dressed in blue hospital scrubs with a chemotherapy port, bring a big smile to the faces of these children. But besides that, it will help them learn what to expect during their treatments. They won’t be alone with Chemo Duck by their sides!
To date they’ve raised more than $210,000 across all locations.
Ollie the Duckbassador
Ollie is the very lovable mascot or, as they call him duckbassador. And he’s everywhere. He’s in the Duck Donuts logo enjoying his favorite donut. What’s Ollie’s fave? Why he loves a freshly made vanilla cake donut with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles. Ollie was born in the Outer Banks of Duck, NC, where we tasted our very first amazing Duck Donuts. But if you spot Ollie, you might have a hard time communicating with him unless you speak Ducklish.
If you hear of a Duck Donuts anywhere near you, get yourself over to it and enjoy absolutely AMAZING donuts!
