So it has been months since we enjoyed our delicious lunch of Café Reyes Pizza and I’m craving it right now!
I’m sitting at my desk in our RV “Ladybug” while parked in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and writing about the pizzas we had for lunch way back in March. And as excited as we are that we have just placed the last state on our map, I’m drooling over pictures of our pizza feast in Point Reyes Station CA. And before I tell you about that yummy lunch, I just must note that we have now been to every single one of the lower 48 states in our RV. It has taken many years to accomplish this feat. We started RVing in 2006! So many miles and so many smiles!!!
Now, back to Café Reyes Pizza. Last year we went to Café Reyes because we had heard how good their pizzas were. Unfortunately the only way we could taste their pizza last year, was to just pick it up at the take-out window and enjoy it in the car while looking out at the Pacific. This year we were able to enjoy the full experience of dining al fresco and having really special pizza for lunch.
The setting was so picturesque that a plate of dirt would have probably tasted good. But it was just an enhancement to the lunch we had there because the food was the real star.
Café Reyes is located in gorgeous Point Reyes Station. They specialize in authentic Neapolitan style wood fired pizza that is made from scratch. Their menu is rounded out with fresh local oysters, organic mixed green salads, a rotating choice of 10 beers on tap and a selection of wines by the glass and bottle.
It was those wood fired pizzas that we went there for, so pizza was what we ordered. Since we couldn’t decide on one single selection we decided to share two pizzas. As you can tell that’s sort of our modus operandi. Besides, at Café Reyes the pizzas are about 10-inches. Most people could easily eat a whole pizza by themselves.
What makes pizza so special at Café Reyes is that they make the dough daily, from scratch, using Caputo 00 flour and A Camaldoli Natural Starter. Plus their sauce is made from San Marzano DOP tomatoes. All if the meat they use to create their menu is nitrate-free and 100% natural. And the support local producers and Marin Organics. All of that explains why Café Reyes pizza is so crave able!
After a great deal of deliberation Steve and I decided on the Tule Pizza and the Miwok Pizza, which turned out to be an awesome pairing. What they shared in common was the sauce and cheese, but that’s where the similarity ended.
The Miwok was topped with the San Marzano Tomato Sauce, Fresh Mozzarella, Dry-Cured Salami, Kalamata Olives, and Garlic. The combination of flavors was a total party in my mouth. I especially loved the crispy edges that only a wood fired oven can create. So after devouring a slice of the Miwok, I took my first bite of the Tule. My. Oh. My. Was that ever good. The addition of Pork Chorizo and mushrooms to the sauce and cheese gave it a beautiful spiciness which made the Tule taste totally different from the Miwok. Both were amazing. And both most definitely crave worthy!
