We were thoroughly enjoying our time in beautiful downtown Greenville, SC and happy to have one more day to spend in the area. That gave us time to visit with Brian and Eve’s friends. They suggested we meet at Bacon Bros Public House Greenville SC for dinner. Since it was one of their favorite restaurants we were thrilled to oblige!
Bacon Bros Public House opened in May 2013, and from what I hear locals have already declared it one of Greenville’s best restaurants. The chef driven, seasonally focused menu changes often and features familiar twists on comforting favorites and spotlights the beautiful abundance of local produce.
Mike Porter and Jason Callaway, are the Bacon Brothers. Porter teamed-up with Callaway in 2012. In one of their early meetings, Callaway brought bacon he had fried that morning at home and transported it in a mason jar that he placed in the center of the table where they were gathered. The men started snacking and talking about their love of bacon. As the pieces quickly disappeared, they realized they had a concept and name for their new restaurant.
Callaway, who has also been inspired by the nearby bounty, approaches his cocktail list the same way Bacon Bros. creates their menu. The bar uses fresh, seasonal ingredients which determine the libations with inspiration from classic Prohibition Era cocktails.
While the Southern standards are covered, their urbanized approach ups the ante. Guests are not just visiting a restaurant with “bacon” in the name. The menu is also loaded with fun, whimsical “snacks” and foods that take us back to childhood. We tried the charcuterie, mouth watering B.E.T. and the Deviled Eggs. Don’t forget to save room for dessert! Just like the rest of the menu, dessert offerings change seasonally and guests are sure to find something to satisfy even the most discerning sweet tooth.
The interior design has a very hip vibe that surprisingly is also quite kid friendly. This made us very aware of why it’s so popular with families. And we were quite comfortable sitting with our son and daughter in law’s friends and their two, very well behaved children. We felt like an Aunt and Uncle visiting with family. To us, that is true Southern Hospitality. We did know Laura and Rob pretty well, but the children were born after they moved away from Florida. So it was a delight to get to know their kids as well!
Being very familiar with the menu at Bacon Bros Public House Greenville, we let Rob guide our selections. We started off with a assortment of appetizers that we practically inhaled they were so fabulous! You could taste the freshness in each bite. There is something to be said for eating locally sourced foods. That why we enjoy being the Traveling Locavores.
We had the Carolina Cheeses with crackers, preserves and nuts and Charcuterie which consisted of meats from the best pigs, using traditional methods and the accompaniments that enhanced the flavor of each bite. The Devil’s Dust Eggs were not your mamas deviled eggs. These delectable deviled eggs were filled with bacon, mustard seeds and devil’s dust spice sprinkled liberally on top. But the crowning glory was the Pimento Cheese Jar which was partnered with housemade saltines and sweet and salty bacon jam.
After an abundance of appetizers we almost didn’t leave room for dinner. Of course somehow we managed. I had the B.E.T (Bacon, Egg and Tomato). This scrumptious sandwich is loaded with pork belly pastrami, sunny side up egg, swiss cheese, tomato, butter lettuce, green peppercorn mayo between two slices of freshly baked marble rye/pumpernickel. It was so delicious that I could not stop eating until every last crumb and perfectly crisp French fry was gone.
Steve ordered the Smoked Corned Beef Brisket Reuben. Between two slices of the same marble rye/pumpernickel as my sandwich were layers of tender smoked corned beef brisket, kraut, Russian dressing, Swiss cheese and an earthy beet mayo, all grilled to perfection.
And just when I thought that we couldn’t eat another morsel, we discovered that Laura had secretly ordered dessert! Because according to our Southern Belle, you must end a meal with something sweet. Luscious individual Pecan Pies topped with Vanilla Ice Cream and Salted Caramel suddenly appeared before us. Who could possibly resist such temptation. Certainly not us.
After that incredible meal we waddled to our cars and headed for our homes.
