Air Fryer Garlic Ciabatta Bread with The Wedge Salad Cajun Style

When Steve and I were looking for the perfect RV for us to live and travel in full time, we looked for one that did not have an oven. From previous experiences with our first and second RVs, we learned that RV ovens are quite small and no where near as reliable as a household oven. Plus, without an oven, there are cabinets below the cook top for much needed storage.

As it turned out Ladybug had the exact kitchen layout that we wanted. The lack of oven meant that we could keep a trash can hidden on a sliding track in one of the cabinets, along with the cutting board that fits on my sink and a couple of large platters. And my baking sheets, and a whole bunch of sauté pans, are stowed in the other cabinet.

My tool chest not only holds my Breville Smart Oven Air Pro and all of my gear, but also holds all of our souvenir magnets!

But don’t think for a second that I’ve deprived myself of an oven. I’ve probably mentioned before that I have a Breville Smart Oven Air (Affiliate Link) that lives on top of my Kobalt mechanics tool chest. You know, the tool chest that this mechanic (chef) uses to hold all of my knives, kitchen gadgets, dish towels and cloth napkins. And let’s not forget that this tool chest has also become a mosaic of our journey, with magnets from everywhere that we have been.

I absolutely LOVE my Breville oven. I have used most of the functions in the 3 years we have been on the road. The only ones I haven’t used are the Proof and Dehydrating settings. I’m sure I will use those one of these days. But I do use the Air Fryer often. More and more I’m discovering how fabulous it is!

So the night I made the Wedge Salad Cajun Style for dinner, I decided that it would be great to treat ourselves to some really good garlic bread to accompany the meal. I make garlic bread often, but I usually use the Broiler setting and watch over it diligently to make sure it doesn’t burn. Because who wants burnt garlic bread?

That night I decided to put the Air Fryer to the test. I pretty much always have Ciabatta Rolls in the freezer. I buy it at COSTCO and it’s only like $6 for 12 rolls. They are perfect for sandwiches and garlic bread. And one of the best features is that they are pre-sliced making it really easy for toasting, etc.

Here’s what I do: First I drizzle good quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil on the cut surfaces of the rolls and use a pastry brush to distribute the oil over the entire surface. Next I sprinkle on some Diamond Crystal kosher salt, a few grinds of black pepper and a liberally dose of granulated garlic. After that I use my Microplane to grate some Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Romano on top. I like a lot of cheese, but you do you. Finally a sprinkle on some dried Italian Herb seasoning and a little paprika for color. Occasionally I also add some spicy red pepper flakes. From there I place the roll halves in the air fryer basket and slide that into a preheated 425º F oven for about 5 minutes. I still kept a watchful eye to make sure my garlic rolls weren’t about to burn. I took them out when the cheese was bubbling a little.

What I loved was that the crusty bottom of the ciabatta rolls got crisp. When I made garlic bread under the broiler the top got melty and crisp, but the bottom didn’t.

I honestly have no idea how this would work in a regular Air Fryer because I have never used one. But have no fear. A solution is here! There’s now a way to turn your household oven into an air fryer!!! Check this out: Gotham Steel has a crisper tray for your oven. The Gotham Steel Crisper Tray for oven is a 2-piece tray and basket for under $25 on Amazon.
