A Food Frenzy in NOLA

On our next to the last day in New Orleans for a while, we went to Domilise’s for Po’ Boys. We think theirs are the absolute best. The place is tiny and totally off the beaten path on Annunciation Street but we keep coming back because the food is sooo good. Neither of us could decide whether we wanted the hot sausage po’boy or the fried oyster one so we got one of each and spit them. Perfection!!!! After lunch we went to the Central Grocery so that we could buy all of the components for Muffulettas to bring home for Eve and Brian; and Steve and I. This landmark on Decatur Street in the French Quarter is where the Muffulettas originated over a hundred years ago. A Muffuletta is an Italian sandwich on a Boule, which is the traditional rustic round French bread. The sesame seeded bread is sliced in half horizontally and the bottom is hollowed out a bit. In this hollow they put the Central Grocery’s famous olive salad of assorted chopped olives, pickled carrots and cauliflower. On top of the olive salad goes Mortadella, Genoa Salami, Ham, Swiss and Provolone cheeses and the top of the Boule. Then the whole thing is placed in a hot oven so that the bread can crisp and the cheese can melt. It is then cut into quarters. For lunch it really serves four. Even for dinner a half of one is an awful lot to eat. Steve and I usually eat a quarter for early dinner and then the other piece a couple of hours later. It is so good with the cheeze all gooey on top of the Italian meats and olive salad. I am salivating just thinking about it! It’s a good thing we are planning another trip to NOLA for Steve’s birthday, Voodoo Fest and Halloween. After food shopping we headed home to relax until it was time to dress for our dinner at Restaurant Stella! that we have been looking forward to since the first time we went there on New Year’s Day.
