We picked up our RV in Franklin, NC and made our 1st stop – Greensboro, Georgia.
Since we bought an older RV we didn’t want to chance driving too far on the first leg of our leisurely trip home. Our SUV was fully packed with just about everything but the kitchen sink. The plan was to pick up a “tow dolly” at the U-Haul in Franklin, tow the car behind the RV and unpack the car when we got to our 1st stop. You know what they say about the best plans? Steve called the U-Haul dealer to confirm that we could maneuver a large RV in and out of their lot and the answer was “no way José”! Thank goodness the trip to Greensboro, Georgia was only about 130 miles because I had to follow Steve.
KOA LAKE OCONEE
Once we got to our campsite at the really cool railroad themed KOA we were able to unload the car and make the RV feel like home for the week. The view from our campsite was spectacular. We were just a few yards away from Lake Oconee and the sunset over the lake took our breath away!
Steve had been dreading the thought of taking the car off the tow dolly, so I guess things do happen for a reason. Without having to unhitch the car it we were easily able to do some shopping at Walmart and Publix. By the time we did our shopping and put everything away in the RV we were totally exhausted but very happy. I had planned on making burgers for our first dinner but Steve saw that I had no energy left for cooking. So he found a place to pick up sandwiches for dinner and that was that.
Our second day in Greensboro was a lot more relaxing. After cooking and devouring a hearty breakfast bowl of eggs, sausage, shallots and potatoes, we ventured out to take in the local scenery. After noticing so many cattle farms in the rural area where the KOA was, we came upon an area with gorgeous housing developments and suburban shopping centers. But everywhere you looked the landscape was beautiful!
THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING
Even though the weather was mild for winter, it was chilly for us Floridians. Fortunately I brought a couple of sweaters and leggings and my new Cherry Leather Arcopedico boots! Not only were my feet warm and stylish, but they are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned! They also come in black and a very dark brown called Cafe. Plus all of their shoes and boots are designed for comfort and long wear. On this trip I did a lot of walking and never had achy feet. And the best part is that I got tons of compliments on them. I normally don’t like closed shoes because my feet are always screaming to be set free. But I never wanted to take these off.
VISITING FRIENDS
One of the reasons we chose Greensboro for our 1st stop was that dear friends live nearby in Athens, Georgia. Linda and I became friends as members of the Wellington Art Society, but she and her husband moved to Georgia 7 years ago. And although we have kept in touch we have not all been together for all that time. And we were so thrilled to have been invited to their home for dinner. Linda and Tony live on an acre property in a home with a Southern country vibe. Outdoor living is highlighted with a huge screened in porch overlooking the terraced kitchen garden and neighboring sheep farm. In the still of the evening we could hear the sheep bleating in the distance which just added to the delight of being with long time friends. Linda and Tony each have their own artist studios. Linda paints, does ceramics and hand crafts jewelry. Tony is a wood turner.
After a couple of hours of catching up and nibbling on an array of hors d’oeuvre we sat down to a beautifully set table on the porch to have a fabulous pulled pork dinner, complete with toasted bread, coleslaw and more. We had eaten so much that there was no room left for dessert. So in true Southern belle fashion, Linda sent us off with several slices of amazing rum cake, two jars of her homemade blueberry jelly made with blueberries from her garden, and a beautiful ceramic wildflower vase also made by Linda.
Our 1st stop in Greensboro, Georgia was an amazing one that we will remember with joy for years to come. But it was time to leave. Fortunately for me I didn’t have to follow Steve to our next stop in Jennings, Florida. We were able to tow the car and I could enjoy the ride alongside my hubby/chauffeur.
Disclaimer: The Arcopedico boots were sent to me to review. But the opinion expressed is 100% my own!
